Chiefs selected cornerback Mansoor Delane with the No. 6 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after trading up. Delane, who was a target for the Commanders, expressed a message for their GM Adam Peters.
One week ago, it appeared more and more like the Washington Commanders would select either LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane or Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Both were positions of need, arguably Washington's two biggest positions of need.
However, things shifted last Thursday when the Tennessee Titans surprisingly took Tate at No. 4, followed by the New York Giants' selection of Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese at No. 5 overall. So, while Tate and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love were off the board, Delane, Ohio State LB Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs were still on the board.
But before the Commanders went on the clock, the Kansas City Chiefs executed a trade with the Cleveland Browns, taking on the No. 6 pick. Kansas City selected Delane. The Commanders liked Delane, meeting with him multiple times, and he's also a native of nearby Silver Spring.
After the Chiefs moved up to pick Delane, he had a message for Washington GM Adam Peters.
"Mr. Peters, you're a little too," Delane said.
Delane was referring to Kansas City jumping Washington and the rumors that he'd be the Commanders' choice at No. 7. Delane was happy and excited and likely meant no ill will toward Washington.
This is also a case of Delane assuming he'd be the Commanders' choice at No. 7. We'd heard for weeks that Styles was head coach Dan Quinn's guy. We also heard for Styles. The truth is, the Commanders didn't expect him to be available when they went on the clock. When he was available, it didn't matter if Delane and Downs were on the clock; Styles was going to be the pick.
The Chiefs traded up to the No. 6 pick to secure cornerback Mansoor Delane, who was highly regarded and a local prospect.
The Commanders had a strong interest in Delane, meeting with him multiple times before the draft.
Mansoor Delane conveyed a message to Commanders GM Adam Peters after being selected by the Chiefs, though the specifics of the message were not detailed.
