The Kansas City Chiefs are considering trading up in the 2026 NFL Draft to select one of two wide receivers for Patrick Mahomes. They currently hold a top-10 pick at No. 9 and another at No. 29 from a previous trade.

The Kansas City Chiefs are in an unusual spot to begin with for multiple reasons.
For one, they have a top-10 pick. They're slated to select at No. 9 in the 2026 NFL Draft's first round on Thursday night.
They've also got two first-rounders this year. The second is lined up at No. 29 from the Trent McDuffie trade with the Los Angeles Rams.
But what if they decide those assets give them a chance to trade up?
"Four that have at least explored moving up (with a caveat coming), in order of where they’re picking: the Chiefs, Cowboys, Rams and Eagles," wrote Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer on Wednesday. "And, yes, I could see a scenario where each of them moves, which we did mention in Tuesday’s notes column. But the twist to it is that I’ve heard that all four have alsomade calls on the idea of trading down. The reality is that the best teams, the ones that go into the draft with flexibility, generally make calls both ways, and that’s what GMs (or de facto GMs) Brett Veach, Will McClay, Les Snead and Howie Roseman are doing in this case. Which is what they should be doing."
The article mentions that the Chiefs are looking to trade up to select one of two specific wide receivers, although their names are not provided.

The Chiefs believe their current draft assets provide an opportunity to trade up and secure a wide receiver that could benefit Patrick Mahomes.

Breer then explains why the Chiefs might move up.
"I think for the Chiefs, it would be Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese or one of the top two receivers (Carnell Tate or Jordyn Tyson)," Breer writes.
Reese is maybe the most explosive defensive disruptor in the draft.
But the WRs would be particularly fascinating because they'd essentially give Patrick Mahomes a new era of pass catcher.
Tate was a star at Ohio State -- and not for nothing, he's also a fantastic blocker.
Tyson is from Arizona State and is thought to be just behind Tate in this draft's rankings. He's also the brother of NBA forward Jaylon Tyson of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It'd certainly be a big deal around the NFL if the Chiefs did decide to trade up for a Mahomes target. That'd be signaling an intent to improve the offense around their superstar QB.
