Chiefs scouting report: USC Trojans WR Makai Lemon

The Kansas City Chiefs strengthened their wide receiver room by retaining Tyquan Thornton in free agency, but the team remains stuck in no man’s land. Questions about the availability of Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, stemming from missed time over the past two years, and the lack of a true franchise cornerstone at the position suggest the Chiefs will select a receiver in the top 100 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

USC Trojans wide receiver Makai Lemon is a quick mover with the speed to stack cornerbacks downfield and create chunk gains after the catch. He is a savvy route runner who manipulates the defender’s leverage to create open space for future separation. Lemon’s technical route running skills are very polished, making him a difficult player for defenders to mirror and match.

Lemon disguises his routes well by using sudden changes of direction and his understanding of leverage. He naturally separates at the top of the stem on routes like comebacks and curls because of his quick deceleration and redirection. He lacks the long speed to provide a consistent field-stretching threat but dices up defenses at the short and intermediate levels.

Lemon is a tough receiver who plays through contact, but he needs to develop his release package and hand usage to absorb less contact early in the route. His 5'11 1/8", 192 lb. frame is easier to control and forcibly redirect than the usual first round-caliber prospect’s.

Lemon excels against zone coverage. He displays a natural feel for locating open space between the defense’s second and third levels. He does all the little things well, including working back to the football and finishing catches through contact. Lemon is a natural hands catcher who regularly makes difficult adjustments for off-target throws outside his fame.

Lemon’s background as a kick returner shows up after the catch. His vision reveals hidden yardage and cutback lanes, and he possesses the athletic lower half to make the most of those opportunities. Lemon uses spins, side steps, stiff arms and the occasional hop to avoid would-be tacklers. His compact frame gives him quality contact balance and unlocks tackle-breaking ability.

Despite being undersized, Lemon breaks through a large number of arm tackles and generates a considerable number of yards after the catch. He was one of 14 FBS receivers to generate more than 500 yards after the catch last season. Lemon also competes at a high level as a stalk blocker.

Lemon aligned in the slot for roughly 70% of his snaps in 2025. That number was already down from about 85% in 2024. This makes him a tricky fit for Kansas City’s offense, considering Rice and Worthy played 44.1% and 30.3% of their snaps in the slot last year, respectively. Selecting Lemon would require the Chiefs to get creative and shuffle their receiver room.
