A fresh NFL opportunity has opened for E.J. Smith, who is now set to begin his pro journey with one of the leagueâs top teams. While his last name carries weight, this move shows heâs carving his own path after the draft, stepping into a new chapter with something to prove.
After going undrafted, E.J. Smith has agreed to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent. The running back confirmed the news himself on Instagram, sharing a message about hard work and perseverance. He wrote, âNothing is given. Everything is earned⊠Iâm ready to work, learn, and prove myself every single day.â
Smith continued, âThank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who believed in me and pushed me to this moment. The journey hasnât been easy, but every challenge prepared me for this next step. Grateful is an understatement. All glory to God for this opportunity. Letâs get it Chiefs Kingdom.â
For those not in the know, Smith is the son of Emmitt Smith, the NFLâs all-time leading rusher. That connection had many expecting him to land with the Dallas Cowboys, especially after he took part in their âDallas Dayâ workout. But like his college decision, Smith chose a different route, focusing on building his own identity rather than following a direct legacy path.
His college career included four seasons at Stanford and two at Texas A&M. In his final season with the Aggies, he had limited opportunities, finishing with 44 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns, along with four catches for 18 yards (via NBC Sports). Despite the numbers, he delivered key moments, including a tough fourth-down conversion against Arkansas and strong blocking on a long punt return versus UTSA.
