Chinyelu's NBA decision one of the most important of 2026 draft cycle

Florida basketball's Rueben Chinyelu is one of 10 looming draft decisions that could shape the 2026-27 college basketball season, according to Sports Illustrated's Kevin Sweeney.

While several stars have already made their decisions to stay or go home — two Florida big men included — several question marks in the upcoming draft cycle could affect the next season of college hoops a great deal. Perhaps none of those players is more important than Chinyelu, the reigning Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year and defensive anchor of Florida's elite frontcourt.

Florida has already swayed projected lottery pick Thomas Haugh and draft prospect Alex Condon back to Gainesville for their senior year, but Chinyelu is going through the draft process to get first-hand feedback from NBA scouts on where he stands in this year's crop of talent. This is fairly common in the modern age of basketball, especially now that players can retain college eligibility while participating in the combine.

Sports Illustrated's pre-combine projection for Chinyelu is a return to Florida, but nothing is set in stone.

"The Gators’ star center is a double-double machine and one of the top defenders in college basketball," Sweeney wrote. "Right now, he profiles as a second-round pick and would almost assuredly return to Florida if that feedback holds, but a strong performance at the combine might make things interesting."

Based on Florida's transfer portal movement, Todd Golden is expecting Chinyelu to come back. The Gators did not add any big men in the cycle, earning just one commitment from Kentucky's Denzel Aberdeen, who was a member of the Gators' national championship team in 2025-26. Losing Olivier Rioux (UC Irvine) and Micah Handlogten (pending) affects depth to a certain degree, but neither was an expected starter.

It's important to note that Aberdeen and Handlogten are seeking waivers to play a fifth year. It's possible that both are denied that opportunity, but both could wind up in Gainesville, too. In Handlogten's case, players can rejoin the team after entering the portal if both sides agree. Should Chinyelu go pro, one would think Todd Golden would welcome Handlogten back with open arms.
