Cincinnati Reds first baseman Sal Stewart has been awarded the NL Rookie of the Month but is currently in a mini-slump, hitting two-for-28 in his last seven games. Stewart is focused on making adjustments to improve his performance.
CHICAGO â After winning the NL Rookie of the Month award, Cincinnati Reds first baseman Sal Stewart wasnât satisfied.
He was more focused on a mini-slump that he has been going through. Entering their series against the Cubs on Monday, May 5, heâs two-for-28 at the plate in his last seven games.
âI always want to push myself to be the best,â Stewart said. âI didnât like how I finished the month. I left something on the table. This month, I want to get it together and stay focused.â
For the first time in his big league career, Stewart is struggling for a bit. Pitchers are adjusting by pitching him more inside, and Stewart is working on adjustments.
âItâs a cat and mouse game,â Stewart said. âTheyâre coming at me in a different way. I need to respond. Thatâs the game. I understand that Iâve got to make adjustments. Iâve got to be better. My last couple of games wasnât who I am.â
His manager isnât too concerned. Terry Francona has seen these ups and downs for players over the course of their rookie seasons.
âI donât know that heâs going to hit .400,â Francona said. âI hope he does, but not too many people do. He has hit some balls at people.â
Francona pointed out that Stewart just missed a potential game-changing homer late in the game on Sunday against the Pirates. If that ball went over the fence, then the mood would have been a lot different on Monday.
Francona is also noticing Stewart make adjustments to the types of pitches heâs getting.
âGuys go through periods where people are making pitches on him,â Francona said. âBusting him in hard. If they donât get it there, theyâre probably going to pay. Itâs the normal course of ups and downs.â
The numbers still look very good with Stewart ranking second on the team in on-base-plus-slugging percentage among the Redsâ regulars. He has been 31% above league average in that category, and he also has nine homers and 29 RBI.
Stewart is taking the most pride in his defense. He has been a versatile piece. In addition to being a strong defender at first base, he has been able to play second base and third base.
âIâm happy about that,â Stewart said. âThat, Iâm very pleased with. Being able to play first, second and third (base) gives Tito more options. I want to be elite at all of those positions to give the team the best chance. Iâm very happy with that. I hope to continue with that.â
He was also looking forward to his first games at historic Wrigley Field.
âThis is sick,â Stewart said. âI remember coming to a game here with my dad when (Anthony) Rizzo played. Itâs awesome. The city is awesome.â
