Clemson vs. LSU has been selected for Week 1 of ESPN's College GameDay, highlighting two preseason top 10 teams. Both programs aim to rebound from disappointing 7-6 seasons and have new expectations for 2026.
When I first saw that Clemson facing LSU had been picked for Week 1 of ESPNās College GameDay, the first thing I thought was, āwow this makes sense.ā For those who are questioning why, Iāve got you covered.
If weāre being honest, Clemson football taking on LSU sounded a lot better in 2025 than 2026. Two preseason top 10 teams facing off to open the season with both programs praised as āclearā National Championship contenders. The hype was tremendous and initially it looked like two programs were fighting for a top spot in college football that year⦠then the rest of the year happened.
Clemson fell to 7-6 as one of the most disappointing teams in the game and one of the only other team teams just as disappointing as them was LSU. Like Clemson, LSU finished 7-6, but also fired their former head coach Brian Kelly after a miserable run with the program. From high expectations to low realities, these programs were at the pinnacle of disappointment last season.
Now, both programs look to 2026 with new expectations and aspirations. Those expectations are nowhere near last seasonās, so why College GameDay this time around? Why pick Clemson vs. LSU after last season?
From what Iāve seen so far, there have been some strong mixed signals about this choice, with much more negative than expected. While I understand the sentiment thinking back to last year, 2026 is a new opportunity for both teams and the situation surrounding both programs made this the clear choice.
That being said, here is why Clemson vs. LSU was the right choice for ESPNās College GameDay for Week 1.
Clemson vs. LSU was chosen for College GameDay Week 1 due to both teams being preseason top 10 contenders looking to rebound from disappointing previous seasons.
Both Clemson and LSU finished last season with a record of 7-6, leading to significant disappointment for both programs.
LSU fired their former head coach Brian Kelly after a poor season, while Clemson is looking to improve under new expectations for 2026.
Expectations for both Clemson and LSU in the upcoming season are significantly lower than last year, as they aim to rebuild and improve their standings.

Letās all be honest with ourselves here, maybe call a spade a spade. What sounds better: Clemson vs. LSU, or Auburn vs. Baylor? That should tell you enough. There simply werenāt many options for them to choose from, and you best believe Clemson and LSU are a bigger draw than Auburn and Baylor. Itās a simple numbers game here.

No matter how you feel about the man, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is one of the biggest names in college football. A massive draw taking over a massive program with Clemson as his Week 1 opponent? Again, letās not overthink this. Along with that, Clemson āstoleā a College Football Playoff spot from Ole Miss a couple years back, and Kiffin was very vocal about it. Thereās history here, even if itās recent.
Dabo Swinney vs. Lane Kiffin is a narrative you can run with and you just know people are going to be doing that. I mean, I know I will!
Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds (2) listens to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney during the first half at the annnual Clemson Orange and White spring game at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina Saturday, March 28, 2026.
While Iām not fully onboard with this one, I get it. I feel Dabo Swinney has the lifetime pass at Clemson, but the narrative has shifted quickly away from that.
There are many out there who see Dabo Swinney as a coach on the hot seat, with some even believing a 8-4 season could get the coach fired. With all the noise surrounding Swinney, expect people, such as College GameDay is with this decision, to take advantage of that narrative.

Clemson is the real Death Valley, anyone who knows how to use a computer or literally anything that has the internet can find this out incredibly easily. Seriously guys, itās mind-numbingly easy to just look up and read.
Anyway, for those who donāt know the history or care to understand it, this is in a way, the āBattle for Death Valley.ā Both Clemson Memorial Stadium and LSUās Tiger Stadium go by the nickname Death Valley. Again, Clemson has history on their side with this but people also like to make the case that regardless of history, LSU the bigger program and are more well known for the name.
Itās a small thing, but it adds fuel to the fire. LSU came to Clemson last year and took the Tigers down in their stadium, so Clemson will look for some payback.
