Connor McDavid has thrown his support behind Leon Draisaitl, backing his teammate’s mindset as a difference maker ahead of the NHL playoffs.
Draisaitl, currently on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury, is expected to return sometime in the first round. He has been sidelined since March 15 but continues to push through intense on-ice sessions.
The German forward still delivered a strong regular season, recording 35 goals and 97 points in just 65 games. His return could shift momentum for Edmonton, given his ability to influence games at both ends.

Reports from insider Ryan Rishaug highlighted his commitment, with long training sessions and visible progress during optional skates.
Speaking after the Oilers’ 6-1 win over Vancouver, McDavid praised Draisaitl’s work ethic and determination.
“There’s no question, and he looks amazing,” McDavid said. “He looks really, really, really strong. It’s a credit to him. It’s a credit to our staff here. I keep saying how good our staff is. It’s the time of year where health and injuries play a big factor. Our guys do an amazing job making guys available.
“But it’s also a credit to Leon for wanting to be there, wanting to be a difference maker, and he will be. He looks great.”
Edmonton closed the regular season with a 6-1 win over Vancouver, powered by McDavid’s four-assist performance. He assisted all three goals scored by Matt Savoie early in the game and later had another assist on a power-play goal by .

McDavid finished the season with 138 points, leading the league and showing his dominance once again. He is excited for the playoffs after failing to win the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025.
“We got a great belief in here,” McDavid said. “Playoff hockey is unique. It’s a skill to win in the playoffs, and we feel pretty good about having that skill, having been there and won a lot of playoff games. But that being said, it’s exciting. It’s exciting for everybody, and we got to be ready to go.”
The Oilers ended the campaign 41–30–11, securing second place in the Pacific Division with 93 points. Their offense remained elite, averaging 3.44 goals per game and leading the NHL on the power play. However, defensive lapses persisted, with the team conceding over three goals per game.
With Draisaitl nearing a return, Edmonton gains a major boost at the right time. His presence, combined with McDavid’s form, could help their playoff run in the first round against the Anaheim Ducks.
