Cubs have an OF logjam problem that could be resolved very creatively

This is a tricky logjam for the Cubs to manage, and while they could simply keep things as they are and use Alcantara as an elite injury replacement, there is a different way to fix this logjam in a creative way.

Cubs could use creative strategy to clear OF logjam

While Kline notes an injury as a way for Alcantara to break back into the Majors after a solid few stints the last two years, the Cubs' top OF prospect might actually have a sneaky path to the starting lineup.

Pete Crow-Armstrong is under contract for a while longer, but the Cubs will see both Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki hit free agency after the 2026 season.

If there's a contender that has some starting pitching depth they could trade from in search of offensive production, the Cubs could use one of Happ or Suzuki to swing a creative and bold trade to land a new pitcher, and open the door for Alcantara to start.

Chicago could also simply look to trade Alcantara this season for an elite pitcher, with, ironically, Sandy Alcantara as a very intriguing option for the Cubs.

With the 23-year-old Alcantara and the 22-year-old Ballesteros, the future of the organization, trading either would be a big loss. It would have to bring back an elite player right away.

So, in theory, trading one of Suzuki or Happ would make more sense this season to open the path for Alcantara to be called up to the Majors this season.

Of course, the far more likely outcome is that the Cubs play out the year with Alcantara as elite depth, and next year, he would replace Happ or Suzuki in one of the OF spots.

But, if the Cubs want to get really creative, they could use one of their outfielders in a trade to bring back an elite starting pitcher, while also clearing up the OF logjam.
