National title-winning Indiana coach Curt Cignetti made headlines last week when he addressed claims about the cost of Indiana's 2025 championship roster.
In response to Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan's comments that the price of a roster that can compete for a national championship is north of of $40 million, Cignetti said on social media that the Hoosiers' roster was "not even close" to hitting that number.
Cignetti clarified even further on the topic of Indiana's 2025 football payroll during a podcast appearance with On3's Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman. Though he didn't reveal the exact figure, he said that the roster cost closer to $15 million than it did to $40 million.
"Now, obviously, it was somewhere in between," Cignetti added.
Cignetti holds a 27-2 record with the Hoosiers, which became the first squad in the 12-team CFP era to finish 16-0 this past season. While Indiana has upped its football investment significantly under Cignetti, it is not viewed as being in the highest echelon of Big Ten programs in terms of resources.
Despite that, IU signed the No. 1 transfer portal class this past offseason, which is headlined by quarterback Josh Hoover (TCU) and receiver Nick Marsh (Michigan State).
The Hoosiers may have an even more expensive roster this upcoming fall, but it doesn't seem as if the total price tag will be approaching that supposedly magic $40 million figure.
