Daily Bean: Bruins Lose First Rounder, Maple Leafs Win Lottery, Jim Rutherford Stepping Away

The Bruins will either wait until 2027 or 2028 for the pick, according to PuckPedia. However, the Flyers and Leafs did complete the Scott Laughton trade before the Carlo trade, so Philadelphia initially owned the rights to the 2027 first-round pick.

But the Maple Leafs also protected that pick, and that protection is top 10. If the Maple Leafs have a top 10 pick next season, they would choose between Boston and Philadelphia, and whoever does not get the pick will slide to 2028.

Chris Johnston (via 𝕏): That brings us here. The Flyers believe that they still get the 2027 first-rounder, and now that the Bruins are involved, their belief is that the pick becomes unprotected (as it cannot slide to 2028 if the Bruins are there). There is a “good chance” the Bruins get the 2028 first-rounder, according to Chris Johnston.

This will unfold in the next few days.

If it is 2028, the Bruins will have three first-rounders that year: their own, and two unprotected (Florida, Toronto).

Colorado Hockey Now: The Colorado Avalanche are up 2-0 on the Minnesota Wild. At first, the game looked like it was going to be another Game 1, with Martin Necas scoring 2:51 into the game, Kirill Kaprizov scoring six seconds later, and then Gabe Landeskog scoring on Colorado’s second shot of the night, but the scoring calmed down after that as we went from a 15-goal game to a seven-goal game.

Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes yesterday, securing the No. 1 pick at the draft this June. The Maple Leafs have missed the playoffs twice in the last 11 seasons, and both times they have won the draft lottery.

Sportsnet: After the draft, Jim Rutherford will step down from his role as the Canucks’ president of hockey operations; he is moving to an adviser role. The Canucks fired GM Patrik Allvin after finishing 25-49-8 last season, and Rutherford said their GM search has come down to five candidates.

The Canucks will select third at this year’s draft after finishing with the league’s worst record.

NHL.com: Ivan Demidov (MTL), Matthew Schaefer (NYI), and Beckett Sennecke (ANA) are the three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the league’s best rookie. Demidov had 62 points in a full 82-game season, Schaefer tied the record for the most goals from a rookie defenseman, and Sennecke was tied for the lead in rookie goal scoring with 23.
