D’Angelo Ponds entered the 2026 draft class as one of the most intriguing value prospects at the cornerback position, combining elite production with eye-catching athletic traits. While he may not carry the same pre-draft hype as some bigger-name defenders, his résumé suggests a player who consistently finds ways to impact the game.

Ponds’ ball production immediately stands out. Over 41 collegiate games, he totaled 32 pass breakups and seven interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. That level of playmaking ability reflects both strong instincts and an aggressive approach to the football. He also contributed on special teams with two blocked punts returned for touchdowns, further highlighting his knack for creating momentum-shifting plays. It’s no surprise his performance earned him an 83 Next Gen Stats (NGS) production score—the highest among all cornerback prospects in this class.

His athletic testing only reinforces what shows up on film. At the combine, Ponds recorded the fastest max acceleration among defensive backs in the W drill, reaching 6.53 yards per second squared. That kind of burst is critical for a cornerback, especially in recovery situations or when breaking on the ball. He also posted a 43.5-inch vertical leap, the best among all defensive backs in attendance, underscoring his explosiveness and ability to compete at the catch point despite his smaller frame.

Undersized but Unmatched

At 5-foot-8⅝ and 182 pounds, size will be the primary concern for evaluators. However, Ponds offsets that limitation with elite movement skills, fluidity, and competitiveness. In today’s NFL, where quickness and versatility are increasingly valued in nickel and sub-package roles, his profile fits well.

Another factor working in his favor is experience. With over 1,900 collegiate snaps and entering the league at just 21 years old, Ponds brings both a developed skill set and room for growth. That combination makes him a strong candidate to outperform his draft position.

Now joining the New York Jets, Ponds steps into a situation where his skill set could translate quickly. His ability to generate turnovers and contribute in multiple phases gives the a dynamic defensive option. If he adapts well to the speed of the NFL, Ponds has a legitimate chance to emerge as one of the biggest steals of the draft.
