Daniil Medvedev was fined after a severe outburst during his match at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost 6-0, 6-0 to Matteo Berrettini. This marked the first double bagel loss of his career, prompting him to smash his racket in frustration.
Former U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is known for having a temper that can lead to on-court outbursts, but his worst meltdown came during the Monte Carlo Masters last week.
Medvedev lost to Matteo Berrettini 6-0, 6-0 ā the first double bagel of his career ā and the Russian was clearly frustrated, destroying one of his rackets during the match. His outburst was so explosive that he was not only given a violation but also fined for the incident.
Over the past year, Medvedev's outbursts have become more frequent as he has struggled to make deep runs in major tournaments. He is currently ranked No. 10 in the world and has not been higher than that since June 2025.
Here's a look at how Medvedev's temper got him into more trouble.
The ATP Tour fined Daniil Medvedev 6,000 euros, or $7,000, for smashing his racket in a straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0 loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters. At the time, the chair umpire gave Medvedev aĀ code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, but the ATP Tour decided to punish him further.
This is the third time in the last year that Medvedev was fined for his on-court actions, as he was fined $76,000 for multiple incidents at the 2025 Australian Open and $42,500 for conduct at the 2025 U.S. Open.
As Medvedev fell into a hole against Berrettini in the second set, dropping his second game of the set and eighth straight game of the match, the 30-year-old smashed his racket multiple times in dramatic fashion before throwing it in the trash. He went on to lose the match in under an hour without winning a game, the first time that has happened in his career.
Smashing the racket didn't help, as Medvedev wasn't able to win a game after his outburst, giving Berrettini an easy victory.
