MOC-Floyd Valley baseball aims for a strong summer run after a tough postseason loss last year. The team, led by standout players Brooks McCarty and Henry Heller, is determined to overcome previous challenges and reach the IHSAA Baseball State Tournament.
ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The path to the IHSAA Baseball State Tournament is a treacherous one filled with good teams and tough obstacles, and there may not be a team that has dealt with those challenges more than MOC-Floyd Valley as the Dutchmen have been on the lising side of a tough home postseason loss three seasons in a row.
The Orange City crew was on the cusp of heading to State last season, but lost its Substate final at home to Sergeant Bluff-Luton 2-0 in nine innings.
This year’s group brings back plenty of production, led by senior pitcher and shortstop Brooks McCarty. The Iowa commit led the Siouxland Conference with 71 total bases and 57 runs while putting up a .500 batting average paired with a 0.50 ERA.
Henry Heller continues his climb as one of the most talented players in the 2028 class, ending his freshman campaign with a team-best 34 RBI at the plate. The sophomore struck out 46 batters with a 1.43 ERA.
MOC-Floyd Valley is excited to put the pieces together as well as a potential run.
“Everybody wants to get better and everybody’s willing to take criticism to get better, and they’re willing to be able to criticize each other to help build each other up and get better.” McCarty said.
“Last year we lost to SB-L and came up one game short of State. That’s definitely a motivator. But we’ve got a lot of upperclassmen, but we also have some sophomores that have to step up this year, make some big plays for the varsity squad,” Heller added.
“I think they have really high expectations for themselves. Their word kind of has been intentional and they’ve been really intentional about showing up every single day and putting the work in that they need to and and really just being present. They know we can’t skip ahead to the first game. We can’t skip ahead to the regular season or postseason. We’ve got to be really intentional about where our feet are, and these guys have done a great job of that so far,” MOC-FV manager Matt McCarty mentioned.
MOC-FV opens the season at home against Denison-Schleswig on Monday, May 18th at 7:30 p.m.
