The Detroit Lions are still waiting to learn the opponent for their international game in Munich, Germany, but we now have an official date.
Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said during a Monday conference call that the Lions will play their game in Munich on Sunday, Nov. 15, as part of a triple-header on the network, according to a report from sports business reporter Daniel Kaplan.
The game will take place at FC Bayern Munich Stadium in Week 10, two game weeks before the Lions' annual home Thanksgiving Day Game (Nov. 26) in Week 12. The NFL plans to announce the remaining opponents for international games on NFL Network at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The rest of the NFL schedule will be released on Thursday night.
It's unclear if the Lions will have a bye week before playing on a short week for Thanksgiving. While an automatic bye was once customary following international contests, that is no longer the case. Lions president and CEO Rod Wood said at the NFL's annual league meetings in March that he believes "it's unlikely that we'll get [a bye week] the week right after the (international) game."
The Lions have played in two previous international games. Detroit lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, 45-10, on Nov. 1, 2015, at Wembley Stadium in London. On Oct. 26, 2014, at the same venue, the Lions completed a miracle comeback from down 21-0 against the Atlanta Falcons when kicker Matt Prater made good on a 48-yard field goal attempt as time expired to win the game; Prater missed his first attempt from 43 yards, but had another chance to put it home when it was ruled that the Lions didn't get the first snap off in time, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty.
