The New England Patriots may benefit from acquiring another cornerback this offseason, despite currently having a strong roster. Notable free agents like Adoree' Jackson and Rasul Douglas could enhance their depth.
The New England Patriots are perhaps strongest at cornerback at the present, but have the potential to be even stronger at the position with the addition of a notable free agent before the start of next season.
According to ESPNâs Aaron Schatz, the Patriots stand to gain from adding another cornerback to their roster despite being strong at every position.
âFifth-round rookie Karon Prunty was seen as a reach by consensus boards, and Scouts Inc. didn't even rank him among their top 300 players for this year's draft,â Schatz said. âCharles Woods, the backup nickel, played 117 snaps for the Patriots last season. Veterans such as Adoree' Jackson and Rasul Douglas would be interesting choices for depth.â
The Patriotsâ cornerback room is led by former Second-Team All-Pro corner Christian Gonzalez, a standout performer for New England in the playoffs last season. The Patriots also have former Super Bowl champion Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones.
Prunty will compete for snaps along with Kindle Vildor at backup cornerback on the outside, with Charles Woods as the backup nickel corner. However, several veterans, in addition to Jackson and Douglas, are still available in free agency for the Patriots to sign, even on short-term deals.
Trevon Diggs and LâJarius Sneed are two other names that stand out in free agency. The Patriots have $35.7 million in cap space to sign another cornerback, while still maintaining flexibility to add depth at other positions.
Potential cornerbacks include Adoree' Jackson and Rasul Douglas, who could provide valuable depth to the team.
The Patriots currently have a strong cornerback roster led by Christian Gonzalez, along with veterans like Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones.
Adding another cornerback could strengthen their already solid defense and provide additional depth, especially with rookie Karon Prunty's uncertain potential.
