The Los Angeles Dodgers are in Denver to face the Colorado Rockies, and Friday evening’s game could present some challenging weather conditions.
The area is under a freeze warning and there’s a chance for snow, something alien to many Southern Californians.
If history is a guide, the Dodgers should be able to adjust.
Thirty years ago, the Dodgers faced the Chicago Cubs in the snow and fell 9-4.
That April 5, 1996, game was 34 degrees, but the wind chill dropped to 12.
“The game was played in the nastiest conditions many players had ever endured,” wrote Bob Nightengale, then of the Los Angeles Times.
And what started as a cold game became a cold and wet game, Nightengale detailed.
“And things got worse as the game went along,” he said. “The wind blew harder, rain fell, soon turning to sleet, then finally to snow flurries.”
Nightengale also quoted second baseman Delino DeShields as saying he “saw everything today.”
“I saw some sleet,” he said. “I saw some snow. I saw some rain. The wind was blowing out 1,000 miles per hour. It was that kind of day.”
The game is expected to face challenging weather conditions, including a freeze warning and a chance of snow.
Yes, the Dodgers have played in the snow before, and they are expected to adjust to the weather conditions in Denver.
A freeze warning indicates that temperatures will drop significantly, which could affect player performance and game conditions.

The Dodgers finished that season at 90-72, while the Cubs finished 76-86.
Was the snow to blame for the Dodgers’ loss? It’s certainly possible, but the Dodgers have won in cold and wet conditions before.
Unlike in 1996, when the Dodgers fell to an ultimately worse team, the 2015 Boys in Blue handled the Colorado Rockies after 4 inches of snow were cleared from Coors Field.
That game — interestingly, also a 9-4 affair — wasn’t quite as cold, being 41 degrees at first pitch and 39 by the game’s end, as reported by the Associated Press.
In this case, the result was expected; the Dodgers won the division that season, and the Rockies came in last.
Much like the 2015 game in Denver, Friday has some snowfall in the forecast before a clear and cold evening.
The snow is expected to end by 3 p.m. or so, with temperatures at about 39 degrees for first pitch and falling to 36 by game’s end.
Winds will be about 10 mph, though, so it could feel colder.
Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register didn’t sound overly concerned about the weather.
“I’ve seen them play in worse here before,” he wrote.
Do you think the Dodgers will be able to handle the weather?
