Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Out of Lineup For Start

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts kept Shohei Ohtani out of the lineup for his start against the Houston Astros Tuesday.

This marks the third time this season Ohtani has exclusively pitched in a game. Prior to Monday’s win against the Astros, Roberts said Ohtani would be present in the Dodgers’ batting order. After the game, though, he went back on his decision.

“Just kind of seeing how it’s playing out, I think it’s best for everyone,” Roberts said.“Definitely not (based on) results. It’s a little bit more body language and just watching the player.”

A day off at the plate may benefit Ohtani, though, as he’s had some struggles over the past week or so. While he’s managed six walks in his last five games, he hasn’t recorded a hit in any of them. His current 0-for-17 streak is the worst skid of his season so far.

Additionally, Ohtani has been solid on the mound when he isn’t in the lineup. His first start since 2021 where he didn’t hit came against the New York mets on April 15, and he managed six one-run innings with 10 strikeouts. The Dodgers tried their strategy again against the on April 28, and Ohtani allowed just two runs through six innings and struck out nine.
