The Los Angeles Dodgers are struggling for runs as of late, and their lack of positive results over the past few weeks finally caused them to drop from first place in ESPNâs Power Rankings.
LAâs win Wednesday evening put an end to a four-game loss streak during which the Dodgers lost by four or more runs in each game, something which hasnât happened to the Dodgers since 1936. The Dodgers are currently 5-7 in the month of May, and have lost their spot atop the NL Westâ0.5 games behind the Padres.
âShohei Ohtani wasnât in the lineup again for his start day Wednesday, and he wasnât expected to be in it on Thursday, either, the first time he has been out of the lineup on back-to-back days â minus stints on the injured and paternity lists â since the universal designated hitter was implemented in 2022,â ESPNâs Alden Gonzalez wrote. âThereâs a reason. Before potentially breaking out with an encouraging performance Tuesday night, Ohtani was 4-for-36 with zero home runs in his first 10 games in May. In that stretch, the Dodgers scored three runs or less on seven occasions.â

The Dodgers only fell to the second spot in the power rankings, though, with the Atlanta Braves moving up to take the top spot.
Ohtani has been a bright spot for the Dodgers on the mound, but hasnât quite figured himself out at the plate just yet. While he still has an OPS just below .800, the Dodgersâ $700 million superstar had just four hits in his first 36 at-bats to start the month.
He figured things out in the second game of the Dodgersâ current series against the San Francisco Giants, turning in a 2-for-4 performance with a single and a homer, but didnât feature in the lineup on his pitching day Wednesday and wonât play in the final game of the series Thursday.
The Dodgers won Wednesdayâs game against the Giants, 4-0, largely because they rediscovered their offense and Ohtani had his best start of the season. If they can continue putting together results like this, theyâre sure to claim back the top spot in the NL West as well as first in ESPNâs power rankings.
