NHL analysts and fans are projecting that Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson is headed this summer for a new long-term contract with an average payout of $8.1 million to $8.3 million per season.
But what matters more than what pundits and fans think is how Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman and Edvinsson see it.
Edvidsson, 23, has said he would like a longer-term deal, presumably comparable in term and/or dollar amount to Moritz Seider’s seven-year deal worth $8.55 million per season.
Yzerman doesn’t discuss contract negotiations, but the best guess is that he would like to keep Edvidsson making less than Seider who is the driving force of this team.
While that makes sense from the Red Wings perspective, the increase in the salary cap is raising salaries of top players. It’s not unthinkable for Edvinsson’s to ask for more than Seider.
New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes, 22, last fall signed a seven-year deal with an average payout of $9 million per season. He signed that after registers 47 and 44 points in his first two seasons. Edvinsson, seven months older than Hughes, put up 31 and 25 points in his first two full seasons with Detroit. Both of them put up 16 goals over their first two full seasons in the NHL.

Other comparables for Edvinsson: Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber, $8.25 million AAV for eight years; Buffalo Sabres’ defenseman Owen Power, $8.35 million for eight years; New York Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller, $8.5 million over eight years.
The two sides could agree on a bridge deal, although projections for that fall in the range $6 million for fewer years. If the salary cap continues to rise dramatically, a shorter deal could work out to Edvinsson’s advantage because he might land a jackpot deal on his next contract.
