Knicks secure hard-fought win over Hawks in Game 1

Eldorado Eagles have successfully adapted during the 2026 prep baseball season, achieving a doubleheader sweep against Sandia Matadors. Coach Ambrose Romero noted that the team's improvements are coming together at a crucial time.
The 2026 prep baseball season began with both the Sandia Matadors and Eldorado Eagles in transition.
So far, itâs Eldorado that has more smoothly navigated its changes.
âThe pieces we needed to work on are starting to flourish at the right time,â Eldorado coach Ambrose Romero said after an 8-6, 13-7 District 2-5A doubleheader road sweep of Sandia on Saturday afternoon.
As the two rivals, who met in last Mayâs Class 5A state baseball final, shared a field for this key doubleheader on Saturday, there was a definite contrast on display. First Sandia, a roster that was forced to absorb several major personnel hits, and hasnât yet been able to duplicate the type of magic that propelled the Matadors to a 2025 championship â a title that came at Eldoradoâs expense.
âWe took it personal, because they did take a championship ring away,â Eldorado senior catcher Sully Wilson said. âThey took everything from us.â
On the other hand, there are the Eagles, whose promising newcomers have allowed them to adeptly fill their roster holes to mix with returning veterans, and Eldorado has quietly stitched together one of the best seasons of anyone in 5A.
Eldoradoâs sweep allowed the sixth-ranked Eagles (17-4, 4-2) to leapfrog the Matadors (11-11, 3-3) into second place in the 2-5A standings behind La Cueva (18-3, 6-0). It also puts Eldorado in excellent position, with a strong finish during the final two Saturdays of the regular season â versus Manzano and Santa Fe â to probably secure a first-round home series in the 5A playoffs.
âItâs a whole different team, but weâre finally figuring out how to play together,â said Wilson, who had a monster day at the plate with seven hits in the two games. âWe always preach that weâll be ready in May.â
And that is fast approaching.
The Eagles had an early and ugly loss to Cibola. There was a metro semifinal loss to Rio Rancho. And, most recently, a pair of 2-5A losses to La Cueva.
Eldorado scored the first six runs of Game 1 before having to hold off hard-charging Sandia, which had the tying run at the plate in the seventh. The Eagles scored three in the first, three more in the fourth.
Wilson had three hits and an RBI in the opener. This game also featured the following statistical oddity: Eldoradoâs Maddox Gonzales drove in three runs in his first three plate appearances without the benefit of a hit. He brought in runs on a fielderâs choice ground ball, drove in another with a sacrifice fly and was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
âWe had to get these two wins over a special team like that, feels amazing,â said senior centerfielder Tim Kamphuis, who belted a two-run homer in Game 2 during a monster eight-run sixth inning for the Eagles. âI took it very personal what they did to us last year. (Today) meant a lot to us.â
Speaking of Game 2, Sandia was leading 6-3 into the fifth inning. The Matadors scored four in the fourth, with RBI hits from Kyle Wormington, Xavier Newsom-Gonzales and Andy Jaramillo.
Eldorado Eagles swept Sandia Matadors in a doubleheader, winning 8-6 and 13-7.
Eldorado has navigated its roster changes more smoothly than Sandia, showing significant improvement as the season progresses.
Coach Ambrose Romero stated that the necessary improvements are starting to flourish at the right time for the team.
Eldorado players, including senior catcher Sully Wilson, felt motivated to reclaim their status after losing the championship to Sandia last year.

Eldorado pulled within 6-5 with a pair of runs in the fifth, then exploded with that eight spot in the sixth.
At the bottom of the order, Sylas Tavarez lashed a bases-loaded, three-RBI double to the left-field wall, and he was followed by Kamphuis, and his homer to right; these two hits put Sandia away.
Eldorado has two against Manzano on Saturday. The Eagles need to keep winning to lock up a top-eight seed for the playoffs.
âWeâre feeling pretty good,â said Wilson, who was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the second game. âWe just have to keep the energy up. When the energy is down, thatâs when we struggle.â
Said Kamphuis: âI was kind of scared at the beginning of the year. I didnât know how the people that came up, how they were gonna do. But they took in our culture and theyâre (playing) better than ever.â
Romero believes Eldorado is beginning to peak as it looks to mount another postseason run next month.

FEIST IS PERFECT: La Cueva senior Luke Feist, a University of New Mexico signee, threw a five-inning perfecto in Game 2 of the Bearsâ 2-5A doubleheader at Capital on Saturday.
And this effort was very nearly a literal perfect game: Feist allowed a ground ball to shortstop on the first batter he faced, then struck out the next 14 Capital batters in a 21-0 La Cueva victory.
