The New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs and signed Tommy DeVito to an extension. Eliot Wolf stated the team is evaluating options for a third quarterback, considering both the 2026 NFL Draft and free agency.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass ā The New England Patriots have their quarterback in Drake Maye. And now it seems they have found a solid young back-up, with the team having signed Tommy DeVito to an extension.
But, since they released veteran Joshua Dobbs, that leaves an opening on the roster for a third quarterback.
So, how do the Patriots plan to fill that hole? Will it be in the draft or in free agency?
"We've evaluated all the quarterbacks. We're continuing to do that," Patriots de-facto general manager Eliot Wolf said regarding the quarterbacks available in the 2026 NFL Draft when speaking with reporters on Monday. "We're looking at some pro options as well.
Wolf also provided some context for the decision to release Dobbs.
"It was really less about Josh specifically and more about the development and growth that we saw from Tommy DeVito in his practice reps last year," he added. "He was, as Josh was as well, a great resource for Drake. We'll continue to evaluate the position, whether that's draft, a pro free agent, a college free agent or however it ends up falling."
