New England Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf was asked about an update on the contract talks for Christian Gonzalez.
The star cornerback would have been entering the final year of his rookie contract, but the Patriots accepted his $18 million fifth-year option, which at least guarantees his spot on the roster until 2028.
Wolf opted to keep things close to the vest for now, with no major update on Gonzalez's contract talks. He did acknowledge that the team wants Gonzalez on the roster, and he is currently under contract with the team. So for now, it would seem as if the Patriots are taking a business-as-usual approach.
“No Gonzalez update other than I’ll continue to publicly say that we want Christian here. And again, he’s under contract, so we would expect that," Wolf said at Monday's pre-draft press conference.
The Patriots would probably love to get a deal done sooner rather than later.
According to FOX Sports' Henry McKenna, the Patriots had “preliminary conversations” with Gonzalez about a contract extension at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. Trent McDuffie reached an agreement on a four-year, $124 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams in the offseason. That is currently the most lucrative deal in the NFL at the cornerback position with McDuffie earning $31 million annually.
Gonzalez will have an opportunity to reset the market when he signs his next contract. Whether that's in New England or for another football team remains to be seen.
There’s no denying that Gonzalez is one of the premier corners in the NFL. He is coming off his first-ever Pro Bowl appearance after being named an All-Pro player in 2024. An argument could be made that he would have been the Super Bowl LX MVP if the Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks.
If anyone has earned a massive contract extension, it would be Gonzalez.
