The nation’s No. 2 ranked tight end in the 2028 recruiting class by Rivals took a visit to Michigan in early April and left having received high praise from the staff.
Ridge Janes, a classmate of defensive lineman signee Titan Davis at St. Louis (Mo.) De Smet, had never been to Ann Arbor until a few weeks ago, so the experience went very well.
“My visit was really great,” Janes told Maize n Brew. “It was my first time seeing the campus and the facilities and the stadium. The coaches and staff were all so welcoming.”
The Wolverines weren’t holding formal spring camp practice when Smet and his family were on campus. But that didn’t stop them from getting a closeup look at the program, including but not limited to, 1-on-1 time with tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham.
“I went on a day they had lifts and meetings, so got to sit in on those, and could see myself in their offense,” Janes said. “I like how Michigan uses the tight ends and it was great talking football and offensive schemes with coach Freddie.”
Whittingham shared with Janes what he thinks of his potential at the next level, which left a major impression.
“Coach Freddie and all the coaches are great and loved getting to talk with coach Freddie too,” Janes said. “Got to spend mostly all day him. Coach Freddie showed how they use the tight ends and that I could be an every-down tight end for them.”
Janes also got to meet with head coach Kyle Whittingham.
“Had a great conversation with coach Whitt,” Janes said. “He’s awesome and is super excited about his team and about Michigan which is great.”
Also the No. 1 overall prospect in the state of Missouri next cycle, Janes looks forward to potentially returning to Michigan in the fall.
“Great. Liked the players’ energy and all coaches and staff seemed excited about upcoming season,” Janes said. “Michigan really takes academics seriously too which I like. Would love to get back on campus soon but definitely for a gameday visit.”
