The Ravens have decided to part ways with RB Keaton Mitchell due to financial considerations and roster flexibility, as explained by GM Eric DeCosta. Despite his talent, Mitchell's role and cost were factors in the decision.
Keaton Mitchell became one of the Ravens’ most exciting offensive weapons over the last few seasons, but Eric DeCosta says the organization faced a difficult business decision this offseason. Speaking with Bruce Cunningham and former Ravens and Super Bowl Champion Femi Ayanbadejo on 105.7 The Fan, DeCosta explained the factors that led Baltimore to move on from Mitchell.
“He was gonna make over $3 million this year based on the system, which was a restricted free agency system, the tender. Again, not a real special teams guy. A talented space runner. He’s not necessarily the most dynamic pass-catching back, so then it becomes, well, would you rather have Derrick on the field or Keaton?”
DeCosta also pointed to roster flexibility and return value as additional considerations. Even while explaining the move, the Ravens GM made it clear the organization still has a great deal of respect for Mitchell’s talent and explosiveness.
