Here is who ESPN has tabbed as the most under-the-radar player for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2026, and why they might be right.
The Alabama Crimson Tide didn’t go quietly into the night after their loss in the Rose Bowl. It attacked the transfer portal, replacing key members of the offensive line and the trenches, while also addressing the middle of the Crimson Tide’s defense.
It just so happens that ESPN believes that one transfer at inside backer could be one of the more important players for Alabama this season.
Caleb Woodson is a linebacker recently acquired through the transfer portal, and ESPN believes he could play a crucial role in strengthening Alabama's defense this season.
Alabama replaced key members of their offensive line and addressed defensive needs by utilizing the transfer portal to enhance their roster.
The transfer portal allows teams like Alabama to quickly fill gaps in their roster, enabling them to remain competitive by acquiring talented players from other programs.

“Under the radar may not describe Woodson, because there should be hype around him coming into 2026. He was a key contributor on Brent Pry’s defense at Virginia Tech for three seasons, and he’s just a damn good athlete. He used to be a year-round competitive swimmer, starting at the age of 6 and continuing until he was 14.”
“He originally played wide receiver, and decided to switch to defense because when he was going to football camps in his youth, the wide receiver and defensive back lines were long. He’s willing to do what needs to be done on the field and should fit in nicely at Alabama.” — Harry Lyles Jr, ESPN
Woodson has already fit like a glove in Tuscaloosa. Despite coming to Alabama as mostly a coverage player, there are reports that he’s close to 240 pounds, and all anyone can talk about are how off the charts his intangibles are.
As the green dot and leader of the defense, Woodson has stepped into some huge shoes following the loss of Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson to the NFL, but his leadership skills have been on full display throughout his short time in Tuscaloosa.
Parlay that with his tangible traits like the ability to cover in space, run and chase ballcarriers, and his growing ability to stack and shed as he adds lean mass, and there is a lot to be excited about when it comes to Woodson.
As the point man in Kane Wommack’s 4-2-5 swarm, the more time on task, the better for Woodson. Fall camp will be huge for him, but if healthy, I expect him to be a household name by the holiday season.
