With all the shake-ups around Major League Baseball over the past few days, as the Philadelphia Phillies decided to move on from Rob Thomson on Tuesday, and the Boston Red Sox let go of Alex Cora during the weekend, there have been some questions about who could potentially replace these guys in the future, and which coaches are on the market who want jobs.
One that continues to come up is former Chicago Cubs skipper David Ross, who didn't necessarily do a great job during his time in Chicago as the head man of a storied organization.
“David Ross: A former catcher — which always helps — Ross was a popular teammate for two World Series winners and helped the Cubs improve in each of his full three seasons as manager, until management jumped at Craig Counsell,” Tyler Kepner of The Athletic wrote.
In Ross's defense, regarding some of the struggles he had in Chicago, it isn't exactly like the front office put him in a position to succeed at all times. He also had to deal with managing for the first time, and he was taking over a legendary figure in Joe Maddon.
Ross had a very average time as a skipper, outside of winning the National League Central in 2020, the COVID season. He was later swept in the postseason, losing two games in the Wild Card round to the Miami Marlins.
The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox currently have managerial openings after parting ways with Rob Thomson and Alex Cora, respectively.
David Ross managed the Cubs for three seasons, improving the team's performance each year, but faced challenges due to front office decisions and the pressure of succeeding a legendary manager.
David Ross is considered for new managerial positions due to his experience as a former player, popularity among teammates, and his track record of improvement during his tenure with the Cubs.
