New head coach is trying to establish a new culture
On ESPN New Yorkâs âBart & Carlin,â Chris Carlin and former Pro Bowl linebacker Bart Scott broke down what this means for the Giants moving forward â and whether Lawrence has any real leverage left.
âI believe so. I mean, one, listen, you canât have this type of distraction with a new head coach thatâs trying to establish himself as the guy thatâs running the building,â Scott said when asked if weâve seen the last of Lawrence in a Giants uniform, via YouTube.
Coach John Harbaugh is trying to install a new culture, build around Jaxson Dart, and create a sustainable roster. Paying a 28-year-old defensive tackle $30 million per year when youâre in rebuild mode? Thatâs not the recipe for success.
âHereâs the thing. You sucked with him,â Scott said. âSo youâve got no leverage. You played all season and we sucked. And never ever did you look like a dominant player against the run.â
Last season, the Giants gave up 3.1 yards per carry before contact â second-worst in the NFL. Lawrence was less effective as his sack total dropped from nine in 2024 to 0.5 in 2025.
Scott believes the Giants should target a similar return for Lawrence to what the Jets received for Quinnen Williams in November 2025. New York traded Williams to the Cowboys for defensive tackle Mazi Smith, a second-round pick in 2026 and a 2027 first-round pick.
âI want Quinnen Williams compensation. ... Quinnen Williams didnât have the bad kind of year that Dexter Lawrence did. Dexter Lawrence has always been rated slightly above Quinnen Williams. So why would I take less?â Scott said.
Why are the Giants considering trading Dexter Lawrence?
The Giants are at a crossroads with Dexter Lawrence due to internal distractions and the need to establish a new team culture under a new head coach.
What is Dexter Lawrence's current contract situation with the Giants?
Dexter Lawrence is currently on a contract that pays him $30 million per year, which the Giants may find unsustainable during their rebuilding phase.
Who is Bart Scott and what did he say about Dexter Lawrence?
Bart Scott is a former Pro Bowl linebacker who commented that keeping Dexter Lawrence could be a distraction for the Giants as they try to establish a new culture.
