A major shift is underway for one of the NFLās most recognizable coaching figures. After nearly two decades on the sidelines, Mike Tomlin is stepping into a completely different spotlight, beginning a new phase in his football journey that keeps him close to the game but far from the field.
Mike Tomlin is reportedly joining NBC as a studio analyst for Football Night in America. Per ESPN, according to sources, he will be part of the networkās Sunday night pregame coverage, marking his first season away from coaching in about 20 years.
This move comes shortly after Tomlin stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in January. He spent 19 seasons leading the franchise and built a strong record, finishing with 193 wins, 114 losses, and two ties in the regular season. Notably, his teams never had a losing record during his entire tenure, a rare feat in modern football.
Tomlin made history early in his coaching career. At just 36, he led the Steelers to victory in Super Bowl XLIII, becoming the youngest head coach at the time to win the title. The team returned to the Super Bowl the following year but fell short against the Green Bay Packers. Despite multiple playoff appearances afterward, he did not reach another Super Bowl.
His shift to broadcasting follows a path taken by his predecessor, Bill Cowher, who moved into television after leaving the Steelers in 2007. Cowher never coached again, and it remains to be seen whether Tomlin will follow a similar long-term route or eventually return to the sidelines.
Talks between Tomlin and NBC reportedly gained momentum earlier this month, leading to the agreement. While fans will miss seeing him lead from the sidelines, his strong personality and deep knowledge of the game are expected to translate well in a studio setting.
