George Russell is feeling the strain of his first F1 title fight, according to those close to him. After three races, he’s nine points behind Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Russell started strong with a win in Australia, but Antonelli hit back with victories in China and Japan. With Mercedes holding an early advantage over Red Bull and Ferrari, a year-long battle between the two teammates is shaping up.
Russell has finished fourth through eighth in each of his first four seasons at Mercedes. The Briton has often pointed out that Michael Schumacher didn’t win his first Ferrari title until year five—a path Russell seems keen to follow.
“Multiple sources in the paddock” have told RacingNews365 that Russell looks like a shell of his former self. He has lost his “typical bravado” amid the unfamiliar “pressure” of fighting for a championship.
It’s said that Russell, who usually looks so “calm”, is now characterised by “stress and uncertainty”. He has faced an ‘unexpected’ threat from Antonelli, a driver he comfortably dispatched last season.
Antonelli has already outqualified Russell twice this season, having done so three times in the entirety of 2025. He only finished ahead in three races, which is why the gap in the standings was so big (169 points).
The Italian is now showing signs of a second-year leap that will be difficult to contain. Russell’s frustration was palpable on the radio during the Japanese GP as he slipped behind his teammate in the standings.
Former team Williams didn’t ‘love’ working with Russell, and one suspects he’s demanding more from his Mercedes colleagues than ever this year given the opportunity before him.
Russell’s early results haven’t told the whole story. He might have taken pole in China if not for a Q3 stoppage that left him with just one flying lap.
In Japan, he was ahead of Antonelli until the safety car timing flipped the race in his teammate’s favour. While the rookie showed real pace in both races, there’s still plenty to suggest Russell has what it takes over a full season.
Last year’s McLaren title fight was gripping because the drivers were evenly matched before Verstappen even entered the mix. It remains to be seen whether Mercedes will offer a similar narrative this time around.
Many outside observers are likely hoping for Russell to stumble, just to keep things unpredictable. It’s something he’ll need to tune out as he adapts to life at the front of the grid.
