The Spain star was already playing with a headband, after needing stitches in a wound following a collision in training, when he was hit full in the face by goalkeeper Juan Musso’s boot.
Lopez was floored by the challenge while television coverage picked up the blood streaming from his face as he waited for treatment by the medical staff.
Lopez was able to continue for Barcelona after a break in play for treatment, although the delay came at a bad time for the visitors. Goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres had put Barca into a 2-0 lead on the night but Atletico were able to hit back just after Lopez’s injury.
The two sides went in with Barcelona leading 2-1 at half-time on the night but still a goal down on aggregate ahead of the second 45 minutes.
