FIFA president Gianni Infantino criticized the narrative around World Cup ticket prices, comparing them to college football costs. He stated that attending a college game in the U.S. is often more expensive than World Cup tickets.
What many believe to be the crown jewel event of the sports world is set to take place in just over a month. But FIFA president Gianni Infantino wants to talk about college football.
Infantino and FIFA have received a lot of criticism regarding the steep prices of World Cup match tickets, and the soccer executive appears tired of the narrative.
Infantino compared World Cup ticket prices to those of college football.
"You cannot go to watch in the U.S. a college game, not even speaking about a top professional game of a certain level, for less than $300,” Infantino said at the Milken Institute Global Conference. “And this is the World Cup.”
A FIFA spokesperson told Front Office Sports that Infantino was indeed referring to American college football rather than soccer, but that he was primarily talking about College Football Playoff ticket prices.
Infantino also gave an interesting guarantee if someone buys a World Cup ticket for an exorbitant amount of money.
“Actually, if somebody buys a ticket for the final for $2 million, I will personally bring him a hot dog and a Coke to make sure that he has a great experience," Infantino said.
