After the Philadelphia Flyersâ 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, it seemed like Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet had his eye on some lineup changes.
âWeâll look at some video and see who weâll get in the lineup for the next game,â said Tocchet. While he did not flat-out say that lineup changes were coming, it sure seems like some changes are on their way.
Forward Alex Bump has been someone Tocchet always mentions when talking about getting guys into the lineup. Even before the playoffs, he always made sure to emphasize that Bumpâs play has nothing to do with his taking a seat. Rather, there are just so many forwards, and none were worth taking out of the lineup.
If Bump were to come into the lineup, there were three possible scenarios that made the most sense. He could have come into the lineup for Owen Tippett, who has been banged up all series. Or, he could have replaced Denver Barkey or Matvei Michkov on the third line.
All signs pointed towards Barkey being the player to come out of the lineup for Bump when the time came, but after scoring a big goal on Saturday, itâs hard to take him out. Now, the answer may be clear.
Matvei Michkov did not take line rushes with the third line on Sunday. Instead, he took them with Garrett Wilson and Carl Grunstrom, while Alex Bump took his spot.
I was unable to make it to practice on Sunday, so the lines and pairs are courtesy of Jordan Hall from NBCSP. The lines and pairs from Sundayâs practice revealed two changes to the Flyersâ lineup. One major, one minor.

Alex BumpâNoah CatesâTyson Foerster
Luke GlendeningâSean CouturierâGarnet Hathaway
Travis SanheimâRasmus Ristolainen
Cam YorkâJamie Drysdale
Nick SeelerâEmil Andrae
It looks like Emil Andrae is drawing back into the Flyers lineup ahead of Game 5. Andrae had played great in Game 1 before coming out of the lineup with an injury in Game 2. Noah Juulsen played well in both Games 2 and 3, and was not an issue in Game 4; he just did not make the same impact that he did the night prior.
Rick Tocchet indicated that he would review video and consider lineup changes for the next game after the recent loss.
Alex Bump is a forward frequently mentioned by Tocchet as a potential candidate for the lineup, though his absence is not due to poor performance.
The Flyers lost 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their last game.
Lineup changes are being considered to improve team performance after a disappointing loss and due to the competition among forwards for playing time.

Andrae drawing back into the lineup makes sense. That is not the major change coming for Game 5.
It looks like Matvei Michkov will be the player who is coming out of the lineup for Game 5 for the Flyers.
I wonât sit here and pretend this is shocking news or peddle any narratives other than the truth. While Michkov has not been a liability defensivley, his offensive game has been MIA since the start of the series. He has entirely lost his spark.
Following Game 2 when a few ânationalâ media personalities pushed the idea of scratching Michkov for Game 3, I though it was a load of crap. The Flyers just went on the road and played two incredible games, and all they could talk about was scratching Michkov?
There wasnât a fire lit under him in Game 3 and Game 4; while better than Game 3, he still looked lost in the offensive zone on Saturday. It might be time for a reset game for Michkov.
I was always under the impression that the most important aspect of this postseason was getting young stars meaningful experience. Wins or losses werent what was important. Rather, it was just the fact that the young talent is getting the opportunity to play in these playoff situations.
Since then, itâs become clear that theyâre not there just to get the experience. The Flyers are in the postseason to win. If scratching Michkov for Bump is what helps them close out the series, then it should not be an issue.
Michkov has not been good, but this should only be a one-game scratch. Unless nobody in the lineup gives Tocchet a reason to take them out, Michkov should return for Game 6 (or Game 1) refreshed with a spark. If he doesnât, then it could become an eyebrow-raising situation.
