Former Alabama Crimson Tide player Luther Davis pleaded guilty in a $20 million fraud case involving the impersonation of NFL players. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft alongside an accomplice.
Another fraud case has come to light, with a former Alabama Crimson Tide player impersonating NFL stars.
Luther Davis, who was part of the 2009 Alabama team that won its first national championship under Nick Saban, pleaded guilty in a $20 million fraud case in which he is alleged to have impersonated at least three NFL players — including a fellow Crimson Tide alum — according to court documents obtained by AL.com.
The original story came from “The Guardian."
Davis is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft — both felonies — for working with an accomplice, CJ Evins (who operated a separate sports management company registered in Georgia), to obtain or attempt to obtain 13 loans in the names of current or former NFL players.
Some of the players Davis impersonated were current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix, former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, and Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney, who played at Alabama from 2017 to 2019.
McKinney was also part of another fraud investigation involving a man pretending to be a porn star.
Davis used to be a runner for agents, which got him in trouble with the NCAA when he helped another former Alabama player obtain money and gifts. The NFL denied him an agent certification because of his shady dealings.
If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
