Former Browns quarterback Kellen Mond discussed the ongoing quarterback competition in Cleveland involving Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, and Dillon Gabriel. The focus is on who will lead the team after a challenging history at the position.
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Kellen Mond took to X on Wednesday to weigh in on the perceived quarterback competition that is happening between Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, and Dillon Gabriel.
Yes, Dillon Gabriel.
We will come back to him in a bit, but the start of the conversation is around who is the leader in the clubhouse to win the quarterback job for the Browns so far through this offseason. After Cleveland's star-studded draft two weeks ago, the attention and the spotlight went directly to the quarterback position.
It's been way too long since the Browns have had even decent quarterback play. If they had even been average at the position, who knows how many wins the Browns' franchise would have had, but alas, it's been bad, and the results have been worse.
As Cleveland looks towards the 2026 season, it is believed that the competition is between Watson and Sanders, but in Mond's eyes, it's hardly that. Mond believes that this job is Watson's to lose. Largely, and obviously, because of the money involved, Watson has the head start in his eyes. However, that isn't to say that he can't get chased down.
There is a very real world where either Sanders or even Gabriel puts real pressure on Watson for the job. In Mond's eyes, again, the player who might have the best chance to do that isn't Sanders; it might actually be Gabriel.
Whatever you believe about the 2025 version of the quarterback competition, Gabriel did, in fact, beat out Sanders to start the year and got the first chance at the job. Mond warns that people shouldn't be surprised if Gabriel bounces back and shows that he is the rightful owner of the backup or the starting position.
The quarterbacks competing for the Browns' starting job include Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, and Dillon Gabriel.
Kellen Mond expressed his views on the quarterback competition in Cleveland, highlighting the importance of finding a leader for the position.
The Browns have struggled with poor quarterback play for years, which has negatively impacted their overall performance and win totals.

The other reality is that Cleveland has put itself in a peculiar position by drafting three quarterbacks in the last two years. There is a rationale behind that, but there is now also a logjam at the position. The reality is that Taylen Green is going to be the third quarterback, pretty much no matter what. That would likely mean that the guy who loses the Sanders and Gabriel battle will be packing their bags entirely.
Time will tell if that debate is right or wrong. Under head coach Todd Monken, Cleveland is going to give the player who gives them the best chance to win the keys to the offense. The players will get the opportunity to determine who that is on the field, and it would make sense that Watson will get the first chance to prove himself again.
