Blake Miller, the former Clemson offensive lineman, was drafted 17th overall by the Detroit Lions. His transition to the NFL is smoother due to his proximity to his hometown in Ohio.
Blake Miller didnât have to go far to start his NFL career, and thatâs a big part of why everything already feels natural.
When the Detroit Lions used the 17th overall pick on the former Clemson football offensive lineman, they werenât just adding protection for Jared Goff. They were bringing in a player who, in many ways, is stepping into a setting that mirrors what heâs known for years.
Unlike most draft picks adjusting to a brand-new city, Millerâs move was simple. A quick drive from his hometown in Ohio put him in Detroit, skipping the chaos that usually comes with draft weekend transitions. That convenience has helped everything settle in faster.
âIâve just been trying to have gratitude for the moment, you know, just enjoying the fact that I get to drive up here and see these amazing people, tour these amazing facilities, and the amount of thankfulness and gratitude that I have in my heart right now is incredible,â Miller said. âItâs awesome. It definitely feels good to be back here, you know, it feels like home.â
But the comfort level isnât just about distance.
Once inside the building, Miller recognized something familiar in the way things operate under head coach Dan Campbell. The tone, the expectations, and the emphasis on physical play all reminded him of his college days with Clemsonâs Dabo Swinney.
âIâd say that there is a lot of similarity just in terms of, you know, they really value toughness,â Miller said. âThey value finish. They value grit. I think that was something that was emphasized to me when I was in college, and thatâs something like just being here today that Iâve heard a lot, and it really resonates with me, and thatâs something thatâs near and dear to me.â

That alignment matters. For a rookie offensive tackle, adjusting to the NFL is already a major step. Walking into a locker room that stresses the same mindset heâs been coached on makes that jump less overwhelming.
Instead of learning an entirely new identity, Miller is building on one thatâs already been established.
âI just canât say enough good things about Coach Swinney and Coach Campbell,â Miller said. âTheyâre two guys who very obviously care a lot about their players, very passionate about what they do. You know, they get fired up when the time calls for it. Theyâre two incredible coaches.â
Early on, it doesnât look like Miller is dealing with the usual growing pains off the field. Between the location and the culture, Detroit isnât something he has to adjust to.
Itâs something that already makes sense.
