The Boston Red Sox suffered a significant loss to the Minnesota Twins, allowing a season-high 13 runs. Starting pitcher Garrett Crochet was particularly criticized after being pulled in the second inning after conceding 11 runs.
It's been a rough start for the Boston Red Sox, but Monday's loss to the Minnesota Twins might have been their worst of the season so far.
The Red Sox got crushed in their series opener at Target Field, allowing a season-highĀ 13 runs to the Twins. Eleven of those runs came in the first two innings against Garrett Crochet, who got knocked out of the game in the second inning.
It was another ugly loss for Boston, which is last in the AL East with aĀ 6-10 record. Only the Houston Astros atĀ 6-11 have a worse record.
"The velocity was not there. The command was not there," Willis said. "You have a bunch of guys already that are struggling, hitting below the Mendoza Line... All of these guys that need to play better. You needed your ace to step up in a big game."
Unfortunately, Crochet was unable to put the team on his back, turning in the worst start of his career. He simply didn't have it, allowingĀ 11 runsĀ (10 earned) on nine hits and three walks while recording just five outs.
"Not only does he come out of the game short, but now you put the bullpen taxed," Willis continued. "His body language, being the captain and the leader in that locker room, was very poor coming off that mound. Put a ton of pressure on the offense."
Boston's lineup, which has underperformed this season, rallied for six runs onĀ 10 hits, but it still wasn't close to enough.
While Willis criticized Crochet specifically, he thinks the team as a whole looks flat.
"It's struggling. They don't look inspired to me.Ā This is the first time since Iāve been covering the Red Sox that have not looked like they want to go out there and win the division," Willis added. "Lotta ballgame left, don't get me wrong... I just think they're gonna continue to struggle."
The Red Sox haven't looked right this year, struggling in all areas to start the season. They still have plenty of time to turn things around, but they need to start playing better baseball sooner rather than later.
