The Boston Red Sox season just continues to go off the rails, and Monday's loss against the Minnesota Twins might have been the worst of the year. Giving up 13 runs to the Twins is just inexcusable, but when we factor in that Garrett Crochet gave up 10 earned runs, it makes things even worse.
Crochet is expected to be one of the best arms in Major League Baseball whenever he's on the mound, but that was far from the case in Minnesota. The left-hander now has a 7.50 ERA and has allowed four earned runs or more in two of his four starts.
I don't see anything too wrong with Crochet just yet outside of his command, but Dontrelle Willis, a former MLB player, had a lot to say about what he's seen from the left-hander.
âThe velocity was not there, the command was not there,â Willis said about Crochet, per Heavy. âYou have a bunch of guys already that are struggling, hitting below the Mendoza line. (We) talk about (Caleb) Durbin, (Jarren) DuranâŠ. You needed your ace to step up in a big game. Not only does he come out of the game short, but now you put the bullpen taxed. They donât look inspired to me.
âThis is the first time since Iâve been covering the Red Sox that have not looked like they want to go out there and win the division. A lot of ballgame, donât get me wrong, but (Crochet)âs body language being the captain and the leader in that locker room was very poor coming off that mound and put a ton of pressure on that offense.â
It's tough to disagree with what Willis is saying here. In a situation like this, especially as Boston is in a position that it wasn't expected to be in, it needs Crochet to come out and be absolutely dominant against the Twins. Not to say that this season is his fault by any means, but games like this don't help his case. I expect more out of Crochet, and I know for certain that the Red Sox do too.
