The Boston Celtics will take on the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 on Saturday night, and former New England Patriots Super Bowl Champion Damien Woody issued a warning for Jayson Tatum.
Tatum exited Game 6 early with reported calf tightness and did not play in the fourth quarter. He was seen with a wrap on his left leg as well. It is not the same leg in which he ruptured his Achilles tendon last year. However, Woody warned that Tatum could be at risk of another significant leg injury if he tries to play through a lower leg injury in his left leg.
“I think you gotta be very careful if you’re Jayson Tatum…I’ve experienced something like this," Woody said on ESPN's "Get Up" Friday. "I had a lower leg injury, my calf, and I had surgery on it. I came back earlier than I should have. The game I came back, it was a playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts, and I tore my Achilles. All because I was overcompensating for the prior injury that I had. I will say to Jayson Tatum, I know you're coming off the Achilles, but be very careful. Because if I'm the Philadelphia 76ers, the first thing I'm going to do is test him. I'm going to run him around a bunch of screens. That's what we do in the NFL. We get an injury report, and we see a guy injured, you know what the first thing we're going to do? We're going to see if that guy's healthy.”
Jayson Tatum experienced calf tightness and exited Game 6 early, raising concerns about his availability for Game 7.
Damien Woody warned that Tatum could risk a significant leg injury if he attempts to play through his current lower leg issue.
No, Tatum's current calf injury is on his left leg, which is not the same leg where he ruptured his Achilles tendon last year.

If Tatum is playing through a lower leg injury, he will clearly be overcompensating somewhere. The danger is if Tatum is dealing with a calf strain. There is an extensive history of players coming back early from, or playing through a calf injury, and tearing their Achilles tendon. A recent example is Tyrese Haliburton, who suffered a calf strain in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and tore his Achilles tendon in Game 7.
Right now, it seems like Tatum will play in Game 7. The actual severity of his injury is unknown, and it is possible that it is nothing serious at all, and he will be 100% for Game 7. However, if he is playing through a calf injury, the risk of another Achilles injury is higher.
Woody understands wanting to play through an injury to help his team win. He won two Super Bowls with the Patriots, and ultimately saw his career end with the Achilles injury he noted on ESPN Friday morning.
