The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds are both off to great starts this year, entering play on Friday tied for first in the NL Central at 11-8.
The Reds' start is even more impressive given that they've gotten no production from their third baseman, former Pirates star Ke'Bryan Hayes.
Pittsburgh traded Hayes to Cincinnati last July after six seasons with the Pirates. Despite being a good defender, his bat declined dramatically during his last two seasons in Pittsburgh, motivating the Pirates to move on.
Hayes hit better for the Reds down the stretch last year, but remained below average. This year has been even worse for the two-time Gold Glover, who's off to a disastrous start at the plate.
Through 17 games, Hayes is just 3-for-47, batting .064/.137/.064 with no extra-base hits and no RBI. His OPS+ is negative-42, and he's been worth 0.2 wins below replacement level.
Ke'Bryan Hayes has not produced any significant contributions as the third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds.

The 29-year-old has shown no signs of turning things around, either, going 0-for-24 over his last eight games.
Unfortunately for Cincinnati, Hayes is still under contract through 2029 after signing an eight-year extension earlier in his career. If he doesn't turn things around soon, the Reds may need to bench him or part ways with him at some point this season.
