McGinnis, born in 1951, began his coaching career at Texas Christian University in 1973. He would embark on an NFL coaching career in 1986, joining the Chicago Bears, going on to spend a 31 years in the league.
From 1986-2016, McGinnis coached on the Bears, Rams, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals, for which he served as head coach from 2000 to 2003. The Rams were one of several teams to post public tributes to McGinnis for his service to the franchise.
McGinnis was the Rams' assistant head coach under Jeff Fisher, serving in that role from 2012-2016. After the 2016 season, McGinnis retired. Fisher and McGinnis worked together during their stops with the Bears, Titans, and Rams.
During his tenure with the franchise, McGinnis helped oversee the football transition from St. Louis to Los Angeles, while helping develop stars such as Aaron Donald, Todd Gurley, Rodger Saffold, and a long list of others. His efforts would lead to the framework current head coach Sean McVay used to turn around the franchise.
