Former Saints QB Speaks on the State of the Team
The NFL Draft is nearly here, and with expectations back in the New Orleans Saints building, many fans, players, and staff members are looking forward to the 2026 season. This is what happens when you seem to hit on a young QB, HC, have an excellent draft class, and finish the season with a bunch of wins.
With the excitement of being back in New Orleans, many former players have been as motivated to speak about the team and give their thoughts on certain things.
In an exclusive interview with Kyle Odegard of Action Network, former Saints QB Jim Everett spoke on the current state of the Saints and some thoughts on the QBs.
When talking about the Saints' cap space, which was a bit better this offseason, Everett had this to say:
"New Orleans has been notoriously bad on the cap. I love their personnel decisions. Love the personnel decisions. But there's one area that I think that they absolutely suck in, and I'll say it: it’s salary cap management. They just don't run the cap well. They have personnel people, but I’m telling you right now, if they called me in for Caponomics, I could help them. They need Shough at $2 million because their other books suck."
"At some point in time, you have to bite the bullet. You have to say we're gonna revamp. And I know they've been just so close in that division. So close with Atlanta. So close with Tampa. They just can't say we're rebuilding, but they needed to for the last five years. They needed to cut some dead wood. This is my opinion as an observer. I'm sure it's not truth and I'm sure Mickey Loomis would say I'm full of s—, but I'm just telling you my opinion."
Everett brings up some interesting points. First, he says the Saints need Shough at his rookie contract, which is true. Shough being the starting QB and on such a cheap contract is a lifesaver for the Saints' cap space, but the rebuilding part, on the other hand, I will disagree with. Yes, the Saints had veterans on the roster last season and made some win-now moves, but this offseason, left for the , 's future is up in the air, and is still in free agency. It feels like the rebuild is here.

Speaking of Shough, Everett had some comments on what the rookie brought last season and what 2026 may look like for the young QB, "He was a little bit hesitant early. He got better, more comfortable, as he understood the game plan. I figured that was going to be the case. With a Kellen Moore offense, which is very similar to the offense I ran, it takes a good eight games (to get comfortable). He'll be much better this year. Now, he had no running game. He didn't have a lot of help. Their special players need to be more special. That will be the biggest thing that helps Tyler out."
The most important point Everett makes is the need to get used to the offense. This was true for Shough last season, and even Kellen Moore himself had to get used to the players he had and what Shough can bring to the game plan. It created a great relationship between the two, as Everett mentions, that can flourish in 2026.
As we know, Shough did not start the season after losing the QB battle to Spencer Rattler. Rattler's time as a starter did not last, and the trade rumors surrounding him this offseason have been strong. Everett addressed these rumors, but more from Rattler's perspective, "Do they peddle him off during the draft? He might need a new opportunity somewhere, or maybe he's fine sitting back, I don’t know. But you want to have good chemistry in the quarterback room."
This was an interesting perspective from Everett that many are not bringing up when talking about Rattler. Most are considering the Saints' motivations and how they need to decide between a strong QB room or more draft capital. But Everett spoke about the idea that maybe Rattler would want out to get a starting job or an easier pathway to become a starter.
