Freiburg secured a crucial victory against Mainz, gaining three points in their chase for seventh place. The match was largely uneventful, with few clear chances for either team.
Freiburg edge past Mainz in low-key but vital victory
With both teams potentially feeling the effects of their midweek European commitments, a largely uneventful contest unfolded at the Mewa Arena. Freiburg, however, will have little concern over the lack of spectacle as they claim three valuable points in their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt in seventh place.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium during a competitive but cagey opening. Freiburg enjoyed slightly more possession and looked to threaten from wide areas, while Urs Fischerâs Mainz side remained organised and difficult to break down.
The hosts carved out the first real opportunity after 26 minutes. Stefan Posch gathered the ball outside the box and unleashed a powerful effort towards the top corner, only for Noah Atubolu to produce a superb fingertip save to deny him.
That moment aside, both sides struggled to generate attacking rhythm, and the game drifted into the interval goalless, with neither team able to inject real intensity into proceedings.
Freiburg emerged from the break with greater purpose and made the breakthrough just two minutes into the second half. A cross to the back post was cleverly flicked across goal by Matthias Ginter, whose acrobatic backheel found Höler perfectly positioned to head home from close range and give the visitors the lead.
Mainz were nearly undone again on the hour mark, as Daniel Batz was forced into a pair of impressive saves. The goalkeeper first tipped Johan Manzambiâs long-range strike around the post before reacting quickly to deny the same playerâs header from the resulting corner.
The introduction of Nadiem Amiri, returning from injury, provided Mainz with a much-needed spark, and the hosts began to show greater attacking intent. Silvan Widmer came closest to an equaliser with 11 minutes remaining, but with only Atubolu to beat, he fired straight at the Freiburg goalkeeper.
Despite late pressure, Mainz lacked the cutting edge required to break through, a theme that persisted throughout the evening. Freiburg, by contrast, remained composed and disciplined, seeing out the closing stages with relative comfort to secure all three points.
The result marks Freiburgâs second consecutive away win in the league and moves them to within two points of Frankfurt. Mainz, meanwhile, suffer their first defeat since February after a blunt attacking display that ultimately cost them.
