Giancarlo Stanton reported improvement in his sore right calf after leaving Friday's game. The Yankees are monitoring his condition before deciding on a potential 10-day injured list placement.
HOUSTON â The day after a frustrating scare, the Yankees and Giancarlo Stanton planned to wait a little longer to see how his sore right calf feels before deciding whether heâll be placed on the 10-day injured list.
âI feel better than yesterday,â Stanton said prior to Saturday nightâs Yankees-Astros game at Daikin Park. âI donât have too much for you guys. I felt it in between first and second base. Yeah, I feel better than yesterday, but Iâm going to get to 24 hours or maybe (Sunday) to see where weâre at and then decide what to do.â
Stanton left Friday nightâs 12-4 Yankees win in the sixth inning while he was on third base. He felt fine running out a single, but experienced some tightness jogging to second base when Jazz Chisholm walked.
While J.C. Escarra was batting, Stanton motioned to the dugout from second base with hopes of being removed for a pinch-runner, but he didnât get anyoneâs attention.
The Yankees realized something was wrong when Stanton slowly advanced to third base and stood on the bag rather than headed home to score on Escarraâs single off the left-field wall.
âIt felt fine at first and then there was a walk to get me to second, but I didnât just walk to second,â Stanton said. âI gave it a jog and it felt weird. And then my secondary (leads) at second kept feeling weird.
âI was trying to get out (of the game) at second ⊠before any more hard steps to set me back.â
The Yankees did make roster moves before Saturdayâs game and it wasnât the expected ones.
Left-hander Ryan Weathers indeed returned from paternity leave to start Saturday nightâs game, but instead of roster replacement Jake Bird returning to Triple-A, fellow reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 2) with right shoulder discomfort.
Giancarlo Stanton sustained a sore right calf during Friday's game.
Stanton stated he feels better than the previous day and will assess his condition after 24 hours.
Stanton left the game in the sixth inning after experiencing tightness while jogging to second base.

âThe last day in Boston when (Chivilli) was putting his shirt on (Thursday), he kind of felt his shoulder bother him,â manager Aaron Boone said. âHeâs been getting treatment the last couple days, and then he went out and tried to throw (Saturday) just to see and it wasnât great. So itâs an IL for him.â
Called up from Triple-A on April 15, Chivilli allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings in two outings.
âHeâll probably head back to New York and get testing and see where weâre at over the next few days,â Boone said.
Stanton is disappointed because missed a lot of games with injuries in his nine seasons with the Yankees, including the first 70 games of last season with tennis elbow in both arms.
âNone of that matters really,â Stanton said. âItâs just whatâs the deal with me? And then decide whatâs best for the team.â
As of late Saturday afternoon, the Yankees didnât schedule an MRI for Stanton.
âHe has experience with that part of the body and knows what it is,â Boone said. âAnd all our people have hands on him and eyes on him in there if we need to do (schedule tests).â
Stanton was out of the Yankeesâ lineup on Saturday. In 24 games, heâs hitting .256 with three homers and 14 RBIs.
The Yankees also opted against bringing in a position player from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in case this turns into an IL situation by Sunday.
If Stanton is shelved, outfielder Jasson Dominguez would be a candidate to for a recall. Also, the Yankees could opt to activate shortstop Anthony Volpe, whose rehab assignment from offseason left labrum surgery could wrap up this weekend.
The over/under for Mondayâs Yankees versus Rangers contest is set at 8 runs on BetMGM. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review shows you how to navigate through their platform.
Volpe was scheduled to play his fourth and five games in six days with Scranton on Saturday and Sunday after appearing in four with the Double-A Somerset Patriots starting April 14.
If Stanton is down for a while, first baseman Ben Rice likely will get the bulk of the DH at-bats with Paul Goldschmidt coming off the bench to play first.
âIâm sure thereâs a part of (Stanton) thatâs ticked off about it, but one of the great things about G is heâs very honest and he deals with whatâs in front of him,â Boone said. âHeâs very good at compartmentalizing everything.
âRegardless (if this becomes an IL stint or not), hopefully this is something thatâs a short-term thing.â
