For the third matchup of this four-game series, the San Francisco Giants turned to one of their most reliable starters, Robbie Ray, to face the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
While Ray did not provide the length that the Giants hoped for, the veteran left-hander battled through a difficult outing against one of baseball’s deepest lineups in a 4-0 loss at Dodger Stadium.
Ray pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned), walked two, and struck out two. He also surrendered a pair of home runs and threw 95 pitches, 56 of them landing for strikes.
Although the Dodgers consistently generated hard contact, limiting the damage to four runs against such an explosive lineup prevented the game from completely getting out of hand early.
The lack of swing-and-miss stuff proved to be one of the biggest issues for Ray throughout the night. His two-strikeout performance reflected the challenges he faced locating consistently in key counts, especially against a Dodgers lineup that rarely gives opposing pitchers a break.
Nearly every at-bat carried pressure, and the Dodgers capitalized whenever Ray fell behind in the count.
Offensively, the Giants could not solve Shohei Ohtani, who delivered another dominant performance on the mound for Los Angeles. Ohtani tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.
The outing further strengthened what has already become an impressive Cy Young-caliber campaign as he lowered his ERA to 0.82 on the season.
The Giants' lineup struggled to produce competitive at-bats throughout the evening, particularly in the lower half of the order. Several of the club’s key hitters also failed to generate offensive momentum.

Rafael Devers recorded two hits, including a double in the ninth inning, but struck out twice while Willy Adames struck out twice as well. Matt Chapman added another strikeout during an otherwise quiet night offensively.
For the Giants' offense to regain consistency moving forward, production from the middle of the lineup remains critical. Chapman and Adames, in particular, have yet to consistently find their rhythm this season, although both recorded a hit in this matchup.
While Devers has shown signs of improvement at the plate recently, the lack of overall support throughout the lineup made it difficult for San Francisco to generate any sustained pressure against Ohtani.
Despite the loss, the Giants' bullpen delivered several encouraging performances once Ray exited the game. Joel Peguero entered in relief and provided 1 1/3 effective innings, allowing just one walk while throwing seven strikes across 12 pitches.
His ability to quickly attack hitters helped stabilize the game after the Dodgers built their early advantage.
Tristan Beck followed with two scoreless innings of his own, allowing two hits while throwing 36 pitches, including 26 strikes. Considering Beck’s recent struggles at the Triple-A level, his efficient outing against a powerful Dodgers lineup was a positive development for San Francisco’s pitching depth.
Ultimately, the Giants dropped the contest, but they still hold a 2-1 series lead heading into Thursday’s finale. San Francisco is expected to send Landen Roupp to the mound against Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan in a decisive series finale at Dodger Stadium.
