Man City extends title race with a crucial 3-0 win over Palace!

Oologah girls soccer team advanced to the state-title game after defeating Regent Prep 4-1 in the Class 3A semifinals. Rylen Walters provided two key assists to Allie Charloe, showcasing the team's 'flatter back' strategy.
OOLOGAH — The phrase “flatter back” has been drilled into Rylen Walters’ head all season long.
Every practice, the Oologah girls soccer team works on the concept of driving the ball flat back toward the goal instead of lofting it aimlessly into traffic.
On Tuesday night, Walters executed the drill to perfection.
Twice.
The senior delivered a pair of pinpoint assists to Allie Charloe in a span of just 62 seconds late in the first half, breaking the match wide open as the Lady Mustangs rolled past Regent Prep 4-1 in the Class 3A state semifinals.
“If I don’t do flatter back, [coach Sam] Bowers gets onto me,” Walters said. “It’s discipline for me to always do flatter back. I’m very thankful for that drill. Very thankful.
“My teammates were putting in work. I saw Allie in the box — she’s always there for me. I kept the ball alive, I kept it in play, didn’t quit on it, knew she had my back and I just kept going.”
The victory sends Oologah to the state championship game for the second time in three seasons. The Lady Mustangs won the Class 4A state title in 2024 and will now face Cascia Hall at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rogers State University’s Soldier Field in Claremore.
The Lady Commandos advanced Tuesday with a dramatic 3-2 win over Fort Gibson, scoring a pair of penalty kicks within 72 seconds during the final 4:44 after trailing 2-1.
For Oologah, the playoff path has been far more comfortable.
The Lady Mustangs have now played three-straight home playoff games, outscoring opponents 14-1, and will travel only 14 miles from their home stadium for the championship match. Tuesday’s win also marked the sixth state championship-game berth for coach Sam Bowers as a head coach.
“I think a lot of people counted us out when we graduated so many kids,” said Bowers, who lost seven contributors from last year’s 16-1 squad. “We graduated a lot of kids, and then you have a [Division I] scorer. People said we might finish third or fourth in your district and stuff, and I just told this group, ‘Hey, go make your own championship.’ It’s special because a lot of people doubted them.”
Oologah improved to 16-1 on the season, with its lone loss coming to Rejoice Christian during the Bristow Tournament before basketball season had ended, meaning the Lady Mustangs were without key players like Charloe and Halle Barron, both of whom scored Tuesday night.
From the opening whistle, the Lady Mustangs controlled possession and applied relentless pressure, and that dominance translated into a 3-0 halftime lead.
“It’s not always been pretty, but the first half of soccer is the best half of soccer we played all year,” Bowers said. “We did everything perfect. We did everything right.”
Barron opened the scoring with 31:30 remaining in the first half, launching a high ball assisted by Charloe from near the far right side of the box over the goalkeeper’s head for a 1-0 advantage.
The final score was Oologah 4, Regent Prep 1.
Rylen Walters provided two assists to Allie Charloe.

Oologah continued creating chances throughout the half.
Charloe narrowly missed inside a crowded box moments later, and Walters pushed a one-on-one opportunity just wide left at the 30:15 mark.
However, the decisive sequence came late in the half.
With 4:02 remaining before halftime, Walters sent a perfect right-side cross into the box, where Charloe beat the goalkeeper to the ball and buried it into the net to make it 2-0.
Just over a minute later, the same combination struck again.
After a throw-in from Barron started the sequence, Walters again delivered a dangerous cross from the right side. Charloe fought through tight marking and redirected the ball with a single touch into the bottom-left corner for a commanding 3-0 lead.
“We saw the more pressure put on them, the more mistakes they made,” Charloe said. “Coach Bowers, when we were scouting them, he was like, ‘They're not much of a skilled soccer team. They're very athletic, they're very quick and they're very physical.’ He said the first team to come out in the first 10 minutes will dominate. I think we did that.”
The Lady Rams struggled to generate much offensively in the opening half, with its best chance coming on a long free kick from Caroline McKinney that sailed over the crossbar.
Regent Prep adjusted after halftime, though.
The Lady Rams took advantage of a more complacent Oologah side in the second half and began generating quality chances while controlling possession more effectively.
That pressure paid off when McKinney blasted a 32-yard free kick from the far left side into the far-right corner of the goal with 36:34 remaining to trim the deficit to 3-1.
However, Oologah raised its urgency before any real momentum shift could develop.
Sweet forced a save on a deep shot midway through the second half, while headers from Madison Penner and Avlynn Hill narrowly missed off additional Sweet corner kicks.
Then, on a left-side corner kick from Brynlee Sweet, Regent Prep defender Abigail Wheeler accidentally headed the ball into her own net while battling Charloe for position, extending the lead back to 4-1.
At first glance, it appeared Charloe may have completed a hat trick, but the junior confirmed afterward she never touched the ball.
“Their girl hit it in,” Charloe said. “She dove in front of me and hit it with her face. That corner was all Brynlee.”
The Lady Mustangs finished with a 17-11 edge in shots, while goalkeeper Sam Sappington recorded 3 saves.
Now Oologah stands one win away from another gold ball, and this time, the title game will practically be in its backyard.
“I'm pumped,” Charloe said. “I'm so excited. It's very rare to get to go to the state championship at all, much less twice in your high school career. So yeah, so excited. I'm excited for the girls. I feel like after Layney Molini [now playing at Texas Tech] left, people expected nothing of us and didn't expect us to win district. So proving all those people wrong, it means a lot.”
Walters echoed that sentiment.
“We’re going to state,” she said.
