Helmut Marko has spoken about his early memories of Max Verstappen, pointing out that even as a teenager, the Dutchmanâs drive was hard to ignore.
Before Marko met Verstappen, the young driver had already made a name for himself in karting circles. His rapid rise through the ranks and his ability to outperform older, more experienced competitors had put him firmly on F1 teamsâ radar.
While Mercedes and Toto Wolff were also showing interest, Marko was able to move first by offering Verstappen an immediate spot with Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls), something no other team could match at the time.
Reflecting on that decision and comparing his early impressions of both Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel, Marko recently shared some insight into what set them apart even back then.
In an interview with Die Zeit, Marko spoke about what made both drivers stand out to him even before they joined Red Bullâs programme.
For Vettel, who would go on to become Red Bullâs first world champion, it was his drive for perfection that caught Markoâs attention.
âWhen Vettel sat opposite me at that table in my office back then, he had just won 18 out of 20 Formula BMW races. He was unhappy that he hadnât won the other two as well,â Marko explained.
Marko added, âI remember that fierce determination. Verstappen gave the impression that the mind of a 25-year-old man was housed in his 15-year-old body.â
âMax had a clear goal, which was partly down to the extremely effective and tough training he received from his father.â
Helmut Marko highlighted Verstappen's impressive drive and performance in karting, which caught the attention of F1 teams.
Verstappen was offered an immediate spot with Toro Rosso by Marko, which was a unique opportunity compared to other teams' offers.
Before joining Toro Rosso, Max Verstappen attracted interest from teams like Mercedes and Toto Wolff.

Bradley Scanes, who previously worked as Verstappenâs performance coach, has spoken before about how Jos Verstappenâs demanding approach helped sharpen Maxâs racecraft and overall awareness on track.
When asked whether he enjoyed the intense training, Marko said: âIt was right on the limit,â and recalled a specific example from a karting circuit in Italy.
âHereâs an example: near Milan, heading towards Lake Garda, there are two go-kart tracks; Max had to drive there until his fingers were blue. Whether it was only ten degrees or raining, none of that mattered.â
âBut he still benefits today from his fatherâs strictness. When Max takes to the track in bad weather, heâs immediately two seconds faster than the others.â
When asked if Josâ philosophy is justified by his sonâs success, Marko said: âYes, but not every boy would have been able to cope with that mentally.â
