Arsenal opted against signing Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho due to concerns over his attitude and consistency. Despite his talent, these issues led the Gunners to reconsider their interest.
How Arsenal managed to avoid a move for struggling Chelsea star
Arsenal was one of the clubs in the running to sign Alejandro Garnacho at the end of last season, as he was leaving Manchester United.
He had fallen out with the manager at the time, and the Gunners were interested in adding him to their squad because there is no doubt that he is a highly talented attacker. His ability and potential made him an attractive option for several clubs during the transfer window.
However, Garnacho’s on-field and off-field attitude had already caused problems at United, despite the obvious quality he possesses. Concerns over consistency and behaviour were understood to be factors considered by the interested parties.
Every club interested in the winger recognised his talent, but it was Chelsea who won the race for his signature and handed him a very long contract.
According to Metro Sport, Arsenal carried out due diligence before deciding whether to pursue a deal, and they concluded that he would not be the right fit for their squad.
That assessment ultimately led to the Gunners stepping away from the move, despite the player’s obvious ability and the competition for his signature at the time.
Chelsea is now struggling to get the best out of Garnacho, while he has also continued to attract attention for the wrong reasons. Those developments may strengthen the view that Arsenal made the correct call by avoiding the transfer.

Arsenal’s recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on signing players who fit both tactically and culturally within the squad, rather than relying on talent alone.
In that context, passing on Garnacho may be seen as a decision based on long-term planning rather than short-term excitement. While his potential remains clear, Arsenal appear satisfied that they chose not to proceed.
With modern recruitment placing heavy emphasis on character as well as quality, the club’s approach suggests they prioritised dressing room harmony and team structure over taking a gamble on an undeniably gifted but more unpredictable player.
