Bryan Acosta played a crucial role in leading Nashville SC to their 100th win with a 3-0 victory over the New England Revolution on May 13. The match featured a commentary error where a goal was mistakenly attributed to Hany Mukhtar.
How Bryan Acosta led Nashville SC to 100th win in its history
As mistakes go, the one Jonathan Yardley made while commentating Nashville SC's 3-0 win over the New England Revolution on May 13 was an honest one.
"It's a beauty!" the Apple TV announcer shouted after Nashville's third goal. "It's Hany Mukhtar!"
It wasn't Hany Mukhtar.
Yardley corrected himself moments later and identified Bryan Acosta as the scorer. It was understandable at first. The goal came from outside the 18-yard box, where Mukhtar has scored more than a few of his club-record 98 career goals for Nashville SC. Acosta, meanwhile, came into the match at Gillette Stadium with just two MLS goals — none for Nashville, and none since 2019.

But Acosta doubled that total in just 74 minutes as Nashville (8-1-3, 27 points) remained in first place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Inter Miami with one game in hand. The 32-year-old central midfielder stepped up to lead NSC on a night when its two normal starters at that position, Eddi Tagseth and Patrick Yazbek, were out with injuries.
"This was probably the best Bryan's played top-to-bottom for us," Nashville coach B.J. Callaghan said.
Throughout his lengthy career with FC Dallas, the Colorado Rapids, the Portland Timbers and the Honduras national team, Acosta has mostly been a defense-first player. He made limited appearances in 2025 with Nashville, mostly as a second-half substitute, though he averaged nearly nine defensive contributions per 90 minutes across his 293 minutes per FotMob.
Acosta had to expand his role in the absence of Tagseth and Yazbek. While not covering as much ground as the energetic duo, he provided accurate passing to steady Nashville's attack, completing 45 of his 49 attempts.
"The two goals he scored (were) really impactful, and how he joined that transition to score the first one was great," Callaghan said. "But you also look at the way that he kind of controlled the tempo of the game in the middle of the field, getting the ball left and right for us. Then some of the tackling and dueling and second balls that he won, just a really complete performance."
Acosta was assisted by Cristian Espinoza on both of his goals. He found the net with his right foot in the 34th minute after Espinoza dribbled past a New England defender and crossed him the ball, and scored with his left foot for his second, in the 74th minute, off a corner kick.
"I played against Bryan back in the days when Dallas was a really tough team to play," Nashville defender Dan Lovitz said. "He was a really big part of that team and making them dominant. He's a very fierce competitor, and was one of their better players for a number of years. ... An incredible guy, great character, someone has a ton of experience, and we're very lucky to have him. And more than anything, the guy can kick the ball harder than anyone I've ever seen."
The victory over the second-place Revolution was Nashville SC's 100th of all time across all competitions, and snapped a four-match winless streak this season. Nashville will likely remain shorthanded for its final two games before the World Cup break.
