Happy Motherâs Day to everyone out there!
For todayâs Question of the Day, I wanted to honor the mothers out there for their support in a lot of our biggest passions out there.
Women in sports is no longer just a niche subculture. The WNBA has now produced several superstars, the amount of college women athletes is steadily on the rise, and television ratings for womenâs sports is skyrocketing. This was even a big week locally in Detroit for womenâs sports, as the city is getting a team in the Professional Womenâs Hockey League.
So todayâs Question of the Day is:
My answer: Iâve written a couple pieces about how it was my dad who sprouted my interest in the Detroit Lions. It was his passion that first planted the seed in my own, whether it was watching him throw his radio headset in disgust after a loss or jump up and down while watching Barry Sanders do his thing.
But for most of those Sundays spent in the Silverdome, my mom was right there, too. Yeah, she may have been reading a book 50 percent of the time, but she wanted to be there to support my hobby and growing passion, and just be there in my life during my happiest and saddest moments.
Amon-Ra St. Brown's mother, Miriam Brown, has been a significant source of support throughout his athletic journey.
The increase in college women athletes and the launch of a new team in the Professional Womenâs Hockey League in Detroit showcase women's growing influence in sports.
Television ratings for women's sports are skyrocketing, indicating a growing interest and consumption of women's athletic events.
Mother's Day serves as a reminder to honor the vital support mothers provide to athletes in their sports journeys.

In fact, she was right there for pretty much all of my sporting events. She drove me to soccer practice and games, and brought orange slices for the team when it was her turn. She was not only at every baseball game I played in, but she always volunteered to be the scorekeeper, because she loved being part of the process. Her interest in tennis helped spawn my high school career in the sport, and she was at some of my biggest matches.
And, now, as I continue my career in sports, sheâs still my biggest fan. She watches our podcasts live, even if she doesnât know exactly what weâre talking about. She donates during Movember, and even took the opportunity to write a story right here on Pride of Detroit. She brags about me to anyone she comes across who mentions that theyâre a Lions fan. Sheâs already told me how excited she is that the Lions will play near her in Miami this year. And she doesnât roll her eyes [within my view, at least] when I have to step away from family time to record a podcast or write an article.
And I still get to share some special sports memories with her, too. She was right there with me watching me tear up when the Lions won their first division title in 30 years a few years ago. We experienced our first live professional tennis experience at last yearâs Miami Open. And whenever the Lions finally make the Super Bowl, Iâm pretty sure my mom is going to find a way to get there (especially if itâs in Vegas).
While I wouldnât be a Lions fan without the passion of my dad, my general love for sports would be almost certainly gone without the support and love from my mother every step of the way. Love you, mom.
